September 26 to 30

At St. Mary's Academy, we continue to dedicate ourselves to move forward in partnership with Indigenous communities in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration. Our community is weaving learning materials and activities into our curricula throughout the year to build awareness and understanding in our community. This year, during Truth and Reconciliation Week, our Grade 9 students will experience a day of learning and increased awareness with presentations, discussions, and a guided walk on the former grounds of the Assiniboia Indian Residential School off of Academy Road. Our Human Rights Team will be selling shirts in honour of Orange Shirt Day (see more information below). On Thursday, students and staff can wear their Every Child Matters shirts in honour of Orange Shirt Day. Prayers offered and personal reflection moments will be woven into our days during the week. In the month of October, Elder Brian Normand will be sharing his story and experiences in the residential school with our students. Friday, Sept 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and we encourage our families to hold conversations, to build awareness, and perhaps participate in live events held locally, or view live events occurring on national television throughout the day.
